Skrtchings

2023 - ongoing

The idea of Skrtchings, which became – among others – the foundation for the short film SKRFF, also turned into a series of large-format, extreme-macro photos of cuts, scratches, and dissolvings of one of the major graffiti walls at Donaukanal Vienna, next to the famous Flex. With the deepest layers dating back to 1982, the wall has been an ever-changing canvas for artists. By digging and cutting through the layers, the photos can be understood as an attempt to find a way to remember history.

Driven by the frustration of extreme right-wing politics becoming socially acceptable again, as well as a shift towards fascist ideology in different countries of the world, this series tries to be a metaphor or a reminder that the history of Austria and its participation in the Nazi regime must never be forgotten.

It can also be read as a metaphor for each human’s individual history and experiences shown here as layers. Each individual existence is unique and complex on one hand, on the other hand it can be very difficult to read, understand and separate each individual experience we make in our lives.
